Can You Do a Master’s in Canada with an HND? Routes, Requirements, and Funding

If you’re thinking about a master’s in Canada with HND as your only qualification, you’ve probably heard both “yes, people do it” and “no, forget it.” Both are partly true, and the difference comes down to the route you take.

The short answer

Canadian master’s programs generally don’t take an HND on its own. Most of them won’t admit HND graduates straight away. That’s the common position, but admission rules are set by each university and department, so treat any blanket answer as a starting point, not a promise.

What Canadian universities actually say about a master’s in Canada with HND

We checked graduate admissions pages for Nigerian applicants. None of them list an HND as an accepted entry credential.

An HND isn’t excluded by name on these pages, but it isn’t listed either. If your credential is missing, email the department and get the answer in writing.

Routes HND holders actually use

1. Finish a bachelor’s first. Some Canadian universities assess an HND for credit transfer, so you may skip part of a degree. How much credit you get, and which year you enter, depends on your HND subject, your grades, and the specific university. Consultancies often say 2 to 3 years, but that’s an estimate, not an official figure. Some local universities also run HND-to-degree tracks. The University of Ghana, for example, admits HND holders with a high enough final GPA into the same or an equivalent subject area.

2. Postgraduate diploma (PGD) or graduate certificate as a bridge. This is the route you’ll see most often. PGDs are described as one-year bridges, common in business, IT, and engineering. Two cautions:

  • The “PGD then master’s” claim comes mostly from consultancies and forums, not from official admissions pages.
  • Many Canadian PGDs and graduate certificates have their own entry rules. Confirm in writing that your HND qualifies for that specific program, and that the university you want for your master’s will count the PGD.

3. Do a Nigerian PGD, then apply. This is cheaper, but we couldn’t find an official Canadian page confirming it works. Ask the target department before you spend money.

Funding: how it really works

The word “scholarship” in the title is the tricky part. Funding in Canada depends mostly on the type of master’s, not on a scholarship list.

These are individual departments, so other programs will differ. The pattern is what matters: a funded master’s is usually a thesis-based one, and you need a recognized bachelor’s to get in. For an HND holder, the realistic funded path is degree first, then a thesis-based master’s.

What you’ll need for the study permit

From September 1, 2026, a single applicant outside Quebec has to show at least CAD 23,448 for living costs, in addition to tuition and travel. Quebec has its own process, and students there need a Quebec Acceptance Certificate first. You can read the update on the SFU international student page.

One more point if you take a PGD. Programs other than bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees must be in an eligible field of study to qualify for a post-graduation work permit. Check your PGD’s field before you pay.

How to check before you apply

  1. Pick 3 to 5 programs and read the admission page for your country.
  2. Email the graduate admissions office with your HND details, grades, and the program name.
  3. Ask whether your HND qualifies directly, and whether a specific PGD or bachelor’s pathway would.
  4. Keep the written reply. It’s your evidence if an agent tells you something different.

Final take

An HND alone rarely gets you into a Canadian master’s. A recognized bachelor’s, whether through credit transfer or a bridge, usually has to come first. Funded master’s spots exist, but mostly in thesis-based programs, and those need that degree.
